OSX Quick Tip - Change Screenshot Folder

I take a lot of screenshots on my Mac mostly because they look nicer - with that sexy font rendering and stuff.

Because I take so many, my desktop usually gets cluttered with them and frankly, I prefer my desktop to be clean, using it only to store a document I know will be moved/deleted within a few hours, a day at the most. When I start taking a lot of screenshots however, I can never bring myself to tidy them and end up just deleting them.

So today I finally got around to changing the location of the screenshots with two simple lines in the Terminal.

I created a sub-folder in the Pictures directory where I want them to be stored. Next open up Terminal and type/paste:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots

Then you need to run

killall SystemUIServer

You'll see the bar at the top flicker some icons on the right hand side. Take a screenshot and check it's gone into that folder. If it hasn't worked, make sure you've used the right folder name!
